Chile is a huge country with vast swathes of natural parks and thriving cities nestled in between. With an endless supply of sights, sounds and tastes to explore, Chile provides everything from outstanding hiking to bustling city breaks. Here are five things you need to know about a holiday to Chile…
1. It boasts world-class surfing
Chile is a must-visit location for anyone who loves the sea, in particular surfers and other watersport lovers. With huge stretches of coastline and unparalleled surf spots, there are plenty of opportunities to catch gnarly waves for the pros and entry level white water for beginners. Arica, in the north of the country, provides all of this and more – for those who aren’t as keen on getting into the sea there is an old War of the Pacific battlefield you can visit at El Morro, a nearby cliff top.
2. Its natural parks collide with major cities
Santiago, the capital of Chile, is overlooked by the towering peaks of Cerro San Cristóbal, a natural park which maintains an urban feel through its use of a funicular on one side and a cable car on the other, with each providing a totally different views of the park and the metropolitan city below. En route, you’ll also find the Zoologico Nacional and a wooden playground for children with a fun interactive fountain, as well as two huge public pools!
3. It’s an animal lover’s paradise
The wildlife in Chile is incomparable, with plenty of fascinating native mammals, birds, fish and bugs. Along the coastline you can find elephant seals, blue whales, sea otters and dolphins, making it a scuba diver’s dream. Inland, keep your eyes peeled for everything from alpacas to pumas and penguins to parakeets! With wildlife tours available for kids and adults alike to enjoy, as well as plenty of hiking opportunities if you prefer to see what you can spot alone, there is plenty to see and learn about here. The Elqui Valley has extremely low levels of light pollution, as well as stunning beaches and fantastic wine, making it the top destination to catch this rare event.
