Your Guide to Amsterdam
Welcome to the Netherlands capitol city – Amsterdam! This incredible city is by far our favourite, we have visited more times than we can count! There always something different to see on every time we come back. This gorgeous city is famously known for its stunning architecture, museums, its maze of canals, bike mayhem, many cultural treasures, incredible food, naughty cafes and of course the red light district.
So by flight you will arrive at Schiphol Airport (get a vending machine croquette before you exit… YUM!). You can get a train from the airport to Centraal Station which takes about 20 mins. Arriving from anywhere else in Holland is extremely easy, from any city in the country you are only a max of 1.5hr away by train.
Amsterdam has an impressive public transport network system to help you get around the city. From buses, metros, trams, ferries and trains there are plenty of options to choose from. The touristy parts of Amsterdam are fairy compact and personally we love to walk the city. For places that are a little further out such as Vondelpark you may want to consider hopping on a tram.
What to do?
Many travellers come to Amsterdam to experience the cafe culture and red light district. Whilst this is a must do in Amsterdam there is so much more to see and do if you dive a little deeper – Here’s a few places we think are well worth a visit.
Hop on a bike
There are around 1,000,000 bikes on the street of Amsterdam – Thats more bikes than people! Why not join them for a day to explore the city. Cycling in Amsterdam is way of life for the Dutch and is a great way to get around. With its flat landscape and its network of cycle routes you can explore much of the city’s streets easily.
Explore by canal boat
Canal boat tours are awesome – You can get hop-on-hop-of passes so that you can explore all around the city. Not only is it a great way to get around but you also get a great tour guide which points out the top sites around town you may otherwise miss along with an in-site into the city’s history and architecture.
Visit a Museum
With 75 museums in the capitol there is something here for every taste. Heres a few of our favourites – Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank Museum, Amsterdam Museum and the science centre Nemo.
Check out the food and nightlife
Theres no way anyone can visit Amsterdam without experiencing the amazing food and nightlife. For something cultural why not go for a beer in a windmill, visit the Heineken Experience, do a Amsterdam bar crawl or get your friends on board for a beer or prosecco bike experience – These are so much fun! For food you have to try french fries with mayo, sample some amazing cheese, a bitterballen and croquettes from a vending machine.
Places to take a wander
Take a walk through the streets of Jordaan, Vondel Park, Dam square, take a wander down through the red light district and walk over the extremely romantic Magere Brug (skinny bridge).
The extra bits
There are a few things you must try desperately to do if you are in Amsterdam. If you are stopping by in the winter months, keep your eye out for openings to skate the canals in winter. Shop for clogs and cheese… just because – Well its Amsterdam! But most importantly – ENJOY YOURSELF!
