During the New Zealand ski-season season (mid-June to October) there is nothing better to do than grab your skis (or snowboards) and hit the slopes.
Living in the Canterbury region at the time, Mt Hutt was right on our doorstep so we got up at the crack of dawn one day, grabbed our boards and hit the slopes for the last day of the season. Check it out…
About the slopes
Mt Hutt has been voted New Zealand’s best Ski Resort with its wide open terrain for all abilities. Over its 365 hectares of slope there are beginners, intermediate, advanced and 4 freestyle terrain parks. We loved it because there was something for everyone and the slopes were nice and wide which always makes for a great run.
Prices
Its a fairly expensive day trip – For a lift pass and rentals at Mt Hutt Ski Area you are looking at $147 NZD per person per day (less for children). If you are thinking of going for a few days it could work out cheaper to buy a season pass which cost $299 NZD if you book early enough. Snow gear is super cheap to buy on Trade Me so rather than renting take a quick look on here when planning your trip, it could work out cheaper.
Getting there
Drive times are as followed – Methven: 35 minutes, Ashburton: 55 minutes, Christchurch: 90 minutes. If you’re stuck for a transport check out Mt Hutt Ski Bus which departs daily during the season.
We really enjoyed our day on the slopes and wish we had figured out how amazing it was before the last day of the season. If you get the opportunity, grab your snow gear and head straight for Mt Hutt!
